Message from the President- February 2011
I recently had the privilege of representing the NJMTA at a reception held at the Governor's residence Drumthwacket. We were invited due to the generosity of two of our members, Lacey's Express, Inc. and National Retail Systems, Inc. who responded to a request for tractor donations Wednesday, February 09, 2011 I recently had the privilege of representing the NJMTA at a reception held at the Governor's residence Drumthwacket. We were invited due to the generosity of two of our members, Lacey's Express, Inc. and National Retail Systems, Inc. who responded to a request for tractor donations to move the new mobile museum that will travel to schools in the state to help teach the great history of New Jersey to students. At the reception and the press conference Governor Christie and Mrs. Christie read the names of the 2011 NJ Hall of Fame inductees. This Hall was started about 5 years ago in an effort to create state pride in the contributions made by NJ people to our society. I have to admit that I felt a little out of place with some of the rich and famous that was in attendance. What was a trucker doing among former governors, Olympic gold medalists, Hall of Famers and famous authors? Governor Christie also announced the new slogan for the NJ Hall of Fame; he said it has just the right amount of Jersey attitude. The new slogan is "Jersey Proud." As I listened to the list of the 2011 inductee candidates it dawned on me that we may never see a nominee from the trucking industry, yet I find it interesting that when we faced some of the biggest catastrophe's of our generation, the attack on the towers, hurricane Katrina, the NJMTA was one of the first to be called to respond. In fact if it wasn't for our industry it's doubtful the vision of the mobile museum would be possible. We are the life blood of our economy and we stand on the front line of our country's defense in case of any disaster. I've never met a trucker who does what he does in search of fame and fortune. No the reasons I normally hear, I find even more noble. We do this in pursuit of our basic freedom, the pursuit of happiness for ourselves but especially for our families. Our industry still recognizes that this pursuit is a right that our government is designed to guarantee us. It troubles me that so many in our culture and far too many of our government leaders has succumbed to the idea that happiness is something that the government can best give us. I feel our industry and the people that work in this industry are more than capable of pursuing our own avenue for happiness, and quite frankly I find the increasing interference of a growing government making that pursuit increasingly difficult. As I stood among the rich, famous, and powerful at the Governor's residence, I'll have to admit the event did produce a feeling of being "Jersey Proud"; but it went a little deeper than that, I felt "New Jersey Trucking Proud" I hope that as we work together to advance the interests of our industry and our families, that you feel as proud of your industry and our association as I do. I find myself asking just what is happening to our country.
