As I prepared to write my first article for the NJMTA membership as the acting President, my thoughts are focused on the recent tragedy that occurred in Arizona where a Congressman was seriously wounded and 6 others murdered at a political rally. I find myself asking just what is happening to our country.

When I view the efforts of our own association to address issues that arise in the political process I wonder, are we as business people always focused on the things that can best serve to strengthen our organizations? While I have had the opportunity to present upon occasion our industry and association's position to the D.O.T. and the Transportation Committees of both the Assembly and Senate I find myself asking are we addressing all the important issues that face our industry or do we need to broaden our concerns?

I came across recently the definition of "Politics" as found in the 1828 Webster dictionary which defined it as follows:

POL'ITICS>, n. The science of government; that part of ethics which consists in the regulation and government of a nation or state, for the preservation of its safety, peace and prosperity; comprehending the defense of its existence and rights against foreign control or conquest, the augmentation of its strength and resources, and the protection of its citizens in their rights, with the preservation and improvement of their morals. Politics, as a science or an art, is a subject of vast extent and importance.

I compared that with the definition of the word "Politics" that I find in the dictionary currently found behind my desk. I think it is astonishing our understanding of what "Politics" is all about in today's culture and to me as a business man is disappointing at how far we have slid.

pol·i·tics Pronunciation: päl- - tiks
Function: noun singular or plural
1a :POLITICAL SCIENCE b : the art of guiding or influencing governmental policy c : the art of winning and holding control over a government
2: political affairs or business; especially : competition between groups or individuals for power and leadership
    3: political opinions

Every day when I come to work I understand that I have 900 families that are counting on me to do the right thing. The protection of those families from the harm and ill guided policies that I see too often coming through our legislatures at both the national and state level serve in too many instances to do nothing other than to rob families of the resources that they can best determine how to use for their own well being.

I have been in the transportation industry my entire life. My personal opinion is that our industry may be one of the few industries left that comprehends that families are the very building block of any society and therefore should be the prism through which anyone entrusted to guiding government policy should view their decisions.

To better understand the state of affairs that we find ourselves in today I invite you to view the video from former NJ Superior Court Judge Napolitano as he explains the point of risk that we find ourselves in today. http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=7n2m-X7OIuY.

I challenge the board of directors and all those involved with the NJMTA to not only to voice their opinions on those issues that we see as benefiting or threatening our businesses, but that we also be vocal on those issues that will strengthen families to insure that we produce the next generation of employees that will help our most vital industry prosper.

Sincerely,

Lew Dekker

I recently had the privilege of representing the NJMTA at a reception held at the Governor's residence Drumthwacket. We were invited due to the generosity of two of our members, Lacey's Express, Inc. and National Retail Systems, Inc. who responded to a request for tractor donations
