New U.S. regulations require chassis to be marked with the USDOT number of the Intermodal Equipment Provider (IEP) in one of five ways.

IMPORTANT NOTICE
ABOUT CHASSIS DOT CITATIONS
& GIER DATABASE

Four require the chassis to be physically labeled or have the USDOT number listed on documents kept in the tractor, or in a weather-proof container on the chassis. Most intermodal equipment owners and operators do not use any of these options.

Instead, most intermodal equipment owners use the fifth electronic option, which is registering the chassis on Internet databases located at www.gierregistry.com and www.chassis.com. GIER is available on the DOT’s ASPEN data portal. The GIER database can also be checked by calling toll-free (877) 511-GIER (4437).

Also, please be aware that the chassis owner and IEP are different companies in many cases. Oftentimes, a shipping line, railroad, or pool lessee is the IEP, as opposed to the equipment lessor-owner, and is responsible for registering the chassis with GIER.

Some law enforcement authorities are not aware of this fifth option. If a police officer or state trooper says they will issue you a ticket because the chassis you are pulling does not have the IEP’s USDOT number displayed on the chassis, please tell them that the chassis is listed on www.gierregistry.com and/or www.chassis.com and that this listing satisfies the regulations.

Thanks for your help.

As I prepared to write my first article for the NJMTA membership as the acting President, my thoughts are focused on the recent tragedy that occurred in Arizona where a Congressman was seriously wounded and 6 others murdered at a political rally. I find myself asking just what is happening to our country.
