Execs at Smucker’s, Exel promise to do better by drivers
Truckers across the country have been outraged about the treatment of some truckers who were refused entry into an Exel-managed warehouse in Cincinnati, OH, during 81-mph winds as tornado sirens blared on Tuesday, Oct. 26. Wednesday, November 03, 2010 Truckers across the country have been outraged about the treatment of some truckers who were refused entry into an Exel-managed warehouse in Cincinnati, OH, during 81-mph winds as tornado sirens blared on Tuesday, Oct. 26. On Friday, Oct. 29, executives from both Exel and J.M. Smucker Co. promised to do better by drivers the next time there is severe weather at one of their facilities. OOIDA Member Duane Soderstrom of Bloomington, WI, was one of the drivers who was refused entry during the tornado warning. He was there to pick up his Smucker’s load when he said security guards told him to go back to his truck, wait out the storm, and that guards would come get him after it was over. Maribeth Baderstscher, vice president for the J.M. Smucker Co, Orrville, OH, said the company is “extremely disappointed in the way the drivers were treated at the warehouse.” “Our expectations for the safety of all individuals on our property were clearly not met,” she stated in an e-mail to Land Line.“The truck drivers are a valued part of our distribution team, and we need to ensure their safety at our facilities at all times.” Lynn Anderson, vice president of communications for Exel, blames a miscommunication between the contracted security team and site management for the reason that drivers were not allowed to seek shelter inside the warehouse. She apologized on behalf of the company for not including the drivers in the “emergency procedures that were implemented throughout the site during the time that tornado sirens in the area were activated.” Anderson said they plan to personally apologize to the affected drivers … and “to assure them that their safety is of the utmost importance to our organization.” She added that the site’s emergency procedures have been updated to ensure “that all those on site premises receive emergency procedure information.” As for Soderstrom, in his 25-plus years of trucking, he told Land Line recently that this situation topped anything he had experienced out on the road. He said that luckily a tornado didn’t touch down and no one was hurt, but things could have turned out differently for the drivers if a tornado had touched down and they were stuck in their trucks. “It was a safety issue,” he said. |
Message from the President- February 2011 I recently had the privilege of representing the NJMTA at a reception held at the Governor's residence Drumthwacket. We were invited due to the generosity of two of our members, Lacey's Express, Inc. and National Retail Systems, Inc. who responded to a request for tractor donations Message From President - January 2011 As I prepared to write my first article for the NJMTA membership as the acting President, my thoughts are focused on the recent tragedy that occurred in Arizona where a Congressman was seriously wounded and 6 others murdered at a political rally. I find myself asking just what is happening to our country.
